“What’s your family like?”

I look up from my strip of jerky at Eliana, who’s knocking back a canteen of water.

“Regular,” I say. “Mom, dad, brother, sister.”

Eliana smirks. “Just two siblings, huh?”

I nod, taking another bite out of my jerky.

“I’ve got six siblings,” Eliana says, looking down. “Three older brothers, one older sister, and a younger brother and sister.”

Seven kids total in her family. It makes sense that one of them would get reaped for the Games. I chuckle as this thought runs through my head.

“What?” Eliana glares at me.

My face goes stoic. “Nothing. It’s just…nothing. It’s not funny.”

Eliana continues to glare at me for a long time. She finally drops her gaze just as my uncomfortableness has reached an all-time high.

“After the feast, I think we should split up,” she says simply.

“Yeah. Yeah, I agree.”

We eat and drink in silence after that.

Ten tributes left. Fourteen dead, two of them by my hands. Three if you count Rene. His death was my fault, anyways. I should have been paying better attention. Should have seen the girl from 4 coming around the corner with her knife and-

I let out a small shriek of pain as I plant my hand right on a broken piece of glass that juts out from the ground (Training Point Lost). It sticks deep into my hand; I gingerly pull it out and find a bandage in my backpack.

I wrap my hand, my face starting to redden and heat up. That girl. That Career. That murderer. She took my brother from me. That wasn’t the plan. But what kind of plan can you have when you and your brother get reaped? We both knew that only one of would come home, at best. But I wasn’t supposed to watch him die. I wasn’t supposed to see him murdered that way.

I will kill the girl from 4. I swear it on whatever life I have left. I will find her, I will attack her, and her family and friends will watch helplessly as I tear her apart and destroy her. She will pay for what she did to Rene. They all will.

A metallic sound makes me sit up quickly. The manhole cover. Someone’s opened it. I stand and grab my rope, ready to defend myself. The sound of someone climbing down the ladder echoes through the tunnel. Then it stops. I stand and wait for someone to come around the corner for about five minutes before going to investigate myself.

I see her almost immediately. The girl from 6. She’s lying on the ground, head rolled away from me, her chest rising and falling quickly. Is she injured? Probably dehydrated. Doesn’t matter; she made a mistake coming down here.

I approach her slowly, deciding what the fastest way to kill her would be. Strangle her? Go back and grab the small knife I have in my backpack? No. Just use my hands and snap her neck.

I’m standing over her now, in the light of the open manhole above me. Her eyes are closed; she must be unconscious. Good. Won’t feel a thing. I reach down and grab her around the neck.

The girl’s hands shoot up and lock around my neck. I try to scream, but she squeezes and I suddenly can’t breathe, my mouth reflexively agape and struggling to take in air. I take my hands off her neck and grab at her hands, trying to claw them off my neck.

The girl’s head rolls slowly to look at me, her eyelids slipping open like a doll’s. They don’t focus on anything, but her hands keep squeezing.

The girl’s mouth opens to reveal a black hole. No teeth, no tongue. Just blackness. Then the blackness erupts out of her mouth like a high-powered hose and enters my mouth.

The girl’s grip on my neck goes slack as deflates in front of me like an air mattress. I scream as she becomes nothing but a layer of skin, and then I scream again as I suddenly feel a wave of destruction work its way down my body and it hits my feet and bounces back up and my leg bones are pulverized and I fall to the ground and then my vocal chords go and I can’t scream and it passes through my skull and-
