Day 15

I’ve been walking around the arena all day, and I haven’t seen anyone. And by anyone I mean the girl from 11. I know exactly where the girl from 2 will be. She’s a Career; she probably hasn’t left the Cornucopia once in the past two weeks, except maybe to hunt.

I watched all the Careers during training, and the only ones that gave off the true Career “vibe” were the boy from 1 and the tributes from 4. If it was one of them that was still alive, and not the girl from 2, they’d have found me and killed me by now. They were hunters. But they’re all dead now, and it’s just the girl from 2 left.

The girl’s still dangerous; we both got the same training score, but I doubt she conned the Gamemakers into giving an eight to her like I did. She’s got some sort of talent; she no doubt participated in the feast. Maybe even killed someone.

But as talented as she is, she’s no hunter. She’ll be sitting at the Cornucopia, waiting for the fight to come to her. And I’ll be there.

Just as soon as I find the girl from 11.

I still can’t figure out how she made it this far. She and her alliance seemed doomed from the start. When the girl from 7 approached me during training to talk about her pacifist agenda, I laughed at her, to her face. Honestly, where did she think we were? Pacifism didn’t save her, or the other girls in her alliance. But somehow, this girl is still alive. How?

Maybe she wasn’t a pacifist after all. It makes sense. Surround yourself with tributes who won’t fight, use them as meatshields. It’s similar to what I did. But the girl seems too sweet and innocent to come up with a plan like that.

Maybe she just hid. Her last ally died six days ago; maybe after that she had enough food and water to last her for a while. But would she have passed up the feast?

Whatever the case, I can’t underestimate her. Look where it got Eliana.

It starts off as a small rumble. It’s coming from somewhere off in the distance, but it’s still loud enough to wake me up from my slumber in the Cornucopia, surrounded by my backpacks. I step out of the golden horn as the rumbling gets closer…

I wake up with a start as bits ceiling fall onto my face. The earth is shaking. Panicked, I grab my backpack and sword and scramble out of my base and into the street, stumbling and gashing my hands as I do (Training Point Lost). I make it out into the street just as the skyscraper to the right of my base collapses on top of it, pulverizing the small building and sending a cloud of dust and debris spraying out onto me…

Standing in the middle of a street, I watch in wonder as the skyscrapers on either side of me tumble towards each other, forming a tent over me. They collide in an explosion of rubble and dust, and I scream and cover my head as I run, debris and chunks of building falling from the sky. Just ahead of me, two other skyscrapers begin their descent into the street…

The skyscrapers are falling. I realize it just as I look down an alleyway just in time to see the other street disappear in a cloud of dust. I duck back inside the Cornucopia, grabbing my sword and two emergency backpacks filled with food and water. Then I stumble out of the horn, moving just in time to escape the skyscraper tumbling down towards the Cornucopia. I look back and watch as the golden horn flattens under the weight of the skyscraper. A cloud of dust shoots out of the collision zone, and a block of rubble flies out and strikes me in the head (Training Point Lost). I fall to the ground, losing my sword in the process. Woozy and disoriented from my throbbing head and the dust cloud, I feel around for it, hearing more groaning coming from the buildings on either side of me…

I peer out from inside the SUV I’m taking shelter in. The last skyscrapers are completing their falls, and a heavy cloud of dust has fallen across the ground. The windows of the SUV are keeping most of the dust out, but it’s still suffocating in here. I pull my shirt up over my face, trying my best to breathe…

I look up from where I’m kneeling on the ground. The cloud of dust is thick, but not so thick that I can’t see what’s above me. The two skyscrapers that fell towards each other are still up, smashed together in a triangle of support. I stand underneath it as the buildings around it crash to the ground, coughing as dust clogs my lungs…

I find the sword at last. Gripping it tightly in my hand, I stand quickly and turn towards the middle of the street. But before I can take a step, a giant slab of rubble falls out of the sky and crushes my outstretched leg, pinning me to the ground (Training Point Lost). I scream in pain, knowing immediately that my leg is shattered. The dust above me clears, and I look up just as the sun is blocked by the final falling skyscraper, coming straight at me.

“It’s over,” I realize as I stop uselessly shoving at the rubble that my leg is trapped under. “I’ve lost.”

The skyscraper looms over me for a moment before its foundation finally gives way. I sigh and close my eyes, feeling a single tear make its way over my eyelid before the building makes impact. I don’t feel a thing.

The dust settles about an hour after the cannon fires. I exit the SUV cautiously, surveying the destruction around me. The tall, looming skyscrapers are gone. Completely gone. Every single one. Just like the tributes that entered the arena, save for me and whoever’s still out there.

I suppose I’ll be finding out soon. Am I one of these skyscrapers?

Will this arena be the place that I fall?
