If I had been asked sixteen days ago if I thought I was going to be the last male Career alive, I would have said yes. The other Careers all underestimated me because of my low training score. As if an eight was a low score. I’m glad Steven’s gone; the way he carted his score of 12 around. Whoever killed him has my respect though; Steven didn’t earn that score just by being cocky.

I wonder who did it. My guess would be either Kelly or Victoria. I took the time to watch everyone during training, learn people’s names. I didn’t want to underestimate anyone. Kelly was by far the strongest girl, one of those tributes who didn’t mind showing off what she could do. We all knew that she could use a meteor hammer after the first day of training.

Victoria from 10, on the other hand, caught us all off-guard. During training, all she did was basic survival training the type of training tributes who aren’t fighters tend to do.

Then she got an 11.

I saw her during the feast, using a knife tied to a rope against the boy from 7. Both of them lost their partners early on, but they both looked fine. That means that both of them have made kills.

The boy from 10 was definitely poisoned; I could see the purple veins in his arms and neck from across the room yesterday. And I’ve got those purple veins now too, since Marie’s dead.

She was nice enough, if not a bit reserved. And she managed to give me this arrow wound in my leg that re-opens every time I make the slightest move (Training Point Lost).

But she’s gone now, and I’m poisoned. I’ll take today off, and see if I can’t get this leg wound to close. Then I’m going hunting.

I can’t help but feel that I’ve got this in the bag. From what I saw during the feast, I’m by far the strongest tribute left. In sixteen days, all I have to show for being a tribute in the games are a few gashes on my arm from Ben. I feel as good as I ever have. And now that everyone’s injured, all I have to do is follow the blood trails.

The one I’ve been following ends in a large pool of half-dried blood in the corner of a hallway. Blood smears up the walls where I assume a claw descended from the ceiling and dragged a deceased tribute away. Must’ve been Marie.

I look down the hallway where a set of bloody footprints tracks across the floor. Some idiot tribute didn’t watch where they were standing, or even think about taking their shoes off. Regardless, they’ve led me right to them. Only six of us left; the time for mercy is gone.

The footprints stop in front of a door further down the next hallway. I get my knife ready.

The door flies open, jolting me out of my sleep. I don’t even have a moment to react before a knife is lodged in my throat.

No.

The girl from 10 stands in the doorway, stoic and menacing. She yanks the rope attached to her knife, and the knife shoots out of my neck, along with a waterfall of blood that runs down my chest. It’s warm.

I fall to my side, hitting my head on my shield just as everything fades to black.
