Today’s winner is…Ben of District 11!
Congrats Ben, your training score is now 6!
The first thing I notice when I wake up after sleeping next to the Cornucopia is that the room is different. I don’t know what’s it is, but it feels like something is missing. Not Kelly; her body was taken away a few minutes after I killed her. What could it be?
I walk over to the pile of foodstuffs warily, scanning the room back and forth. There’s nothing here. Nothing. Besides me, the room is totally empty of people and mannequins.
The mannequins. They’re gone.
I turn back to grab my sword from the Cornucopia when a female mannequin steps around the corner. Before I can get a glimpse of who she is, she starts to morph. The still-morphing mannequin picks up my sword and moves towards me.
I scramble over to the pile of weapons and pull out two swords, quickly trying to pick between them before deciding to wield both.
Whirling to face the mannequin, I find myself staring at Sarah. My old mannequin. Apparently all alliances are off, as her sword glances off the two I hold in my hands.
The mannequins have turned.
Someone’s coming. I start twirling my knife, ready to launch it at whoever comes around the corner. There’s only three of us left; the end of the Games is very near.
My target comes around the corner and I yank my thrown knife back just in time. It’s Preston.
Well this is a nice surprise.
“Back from the dead once again?” I ask him.
He responds by charging at me with a drawn sword.
There’s no way out of here. Been walking for days and there’s no way out of here my shoes are ripped feet bleeding doesn’t really hurt though nothing really hurts anymore and who’s that?
I look further down the hallway. Someone’s standing there. I know them. I know who that is. He’s the one. The one I’ve been trying to remember.
I start running.
I cry out as Sarah’s sword slips past my guard and cuts into my side (Training Point Lost). Whirling away, I slash out with my swords and feel a slight resistance as they graze across Sarah’s leg. Breaking off from me, Sarah glances down at her sparking leg before looking back up at me.
I wonder if it hurts her.
The battle starts up again, with Sarah attacking me ferociously and without reserve. I block as best as I can, trying to keep my energy up. There’s no way the mannequins can get tired; I have to end this now.
Sarah slams her blade into my two crossed swords. From there, I simply push her sword away with one while I rear back and swing with the other. Sarah’s head flies off her body as my sword slices through her neck. The rest of her instantly collapses in a smoking heap. She’s gone. Again. And I’m still here.
Breathing heavily, I stumble over to the Cornucopia for another bandage, waiting to. The other two mannequins missing from the room must be out hunting the other tributes. With any luck, I’ll win without needing to fight one of them. But that’ doubtful, knowing my competition.
Preston’s body twitches as I yank my knife out of his skull. Must have hit some kind of nerve processor or something. Regardless, he’s dead and I’m fine, if not a bit shaken up. I should have known the Gamemakers would do something like that. From now on, I’m killing anything that I come across in the arena, whether it’s tribute, muttation, or mannequin. I head back to my room as I collect myself.
The cannon that fires lets me know that someone else in the arena wasn’t so quick to act as I was.
And then there were two.
I was running towards him. He was running towards me.
He had something in his hand. Something shiny.
And now he’s embracing me, one arm around me and a fist over my heart.
“I missed you, Peyton,” I whisper, smiling as blood pours from my mouth.
