Granted, all of us started figuratively dying when we entered the arena. But the poison makes it real for me.
I stumble away from my most recent pool of vomit. It’s been a day since I’ve been able to keep any food down. And with no way to clean up the mess, I have to just try my best to keep it on one side of the room. I would switch rooms, but I don’t know if the other doors are safe. And I’d have to wander the hallways until I found one that was. The last time I left this room, Irving died.
He should have just run faster. He shouldn’t have let himself get killed. And even when he died, it was over in a matter of minutes. Not the case for me.
They made it sound so easy back in training. “Just kill another tribute and you’ll get the antidote.” How am I supposed to kill someone without a weapon? I only had a small knife, and I threw it at the boy from 5 three days ago.
I put a hand to my forehead as another headache racks my brain. The purple in my veins is all over my body now. Purple veins on my legs, on my arms, and I’m sure it’s on my neck and face too. I feel like I could die within the hour, but I know the Gamemakers will draw it out as long as they can.
Maybe someone will come find me and kill me before then.
I could just do it now.
Just stab her, take the supplies, and leave. Stab her just enough to leave her alive, but close to death. That would give me enough time to go find another tribute, stalk them until she dies and then quickly kill them. Two birds with one stone. No more partner, no more poison.
But what if she dies right away? I have no idea what this poison will do once it enters my system. That’s a risk.
Another risk is if she’s not asleep at all. If she’s just waiting for me to get near her. I know she’s got a small knife on her.
I can’t do it now. Not yet. But at the rate tributes are dying, I’m gonna have to lose Mariel soon.
The cannon fires just as I open the door. Smoke billows out, choking me and stinging my eyes; I retreat back and let the room clear a bit. There’s gotta be a tribute in there, otherwise the room wouldn’t have been on fire. Why would the Gamemakers waste all that energy?
The room is a charred wasteland. Skeletons of trees litter the barren floor and burnt leaves float past my face. This used to be a garden of some kind. Behind me, Kelly kicks through piles of ash, looking for valuables that survived the fire.
I turn and finally see the tribute. What’s left of her, anyways, which is just a charred corpse curled up in a fetal position. In her right hand is a crossbow, coated in rust-like blood.
“Someone else was in here.”
I look over at Kelly, who is poking around in a pile of ash.
She holds up the half-burnt remnants of a box with “ATCHE” printed across the front in big white letters.
Kelly rolls her eyes.
I look around the room. This was no Gamemaker fire. Another tribute did this. But who?
“No more shields,” I whisper to myself as I hold a wet cloth against the burn on my leg (Training Point Lost), not paying much attention to the purple veins in my arm.
“No more shields.”
