I stumble into a room and slam the door shut behind me, pressing my body against it in exhaustion. The scraping noise reaches the door and suddenly stops. Whatever was out there apparently won’t come in here, thank God.

I slide down the door to my knees, clutching my stomach. The poison in my system is doing a serious number on me; I’m surprised that I made it into the room, without throwing up, no less. I left to go look for Hannah, my mannequin. Two days ago, I sent her out to find a tribute and bring them to me so I could kill them.

She didn’t come back.

Most likely she got taken out. But there’s a chance that she’s just stuck somewhere, so I had to go look for her. Not much else I could do other than sit and wait to die. I’m not going out like that.

I spin away from the wall and plant my hands on the floor, vomiting. God. I can’t get back up for a good minute because of my throbbing headache. But when I do, I realize that I’m not alone in this room.

“Hello.”

The girl pushes herself up to a sitting position. The purple veins on her neck and arms tell me that she’s poisoned, and that she’s had it for just about as long as me.

“Are you here to kill me?” she asks.

I can’t answer at first.

“I don’t know. Maybe,” I stammer. I stand and walk towards her before falling back to my knees and vomiting again.

“Your partner died on the first day, right?” the girl asks, ignoring my heaving. I can’t do anything but nod.

“I lost mine the next day,” the girl says, looking at me with unfocused, bloodshot eyes. “And then I spent five days in this room. I’ve been dying for five days.”

“Six for me,” I moan, crawling away from my vomit, crawling towards her.

“Is this how you thought you’d die?”

I slump to the floor and start crying.

“No. No no no nooooo…”

She’s crying now too.

“The worst part is being alone. Looking at my arms and seeing the purple and knowing I’m going to die and I’m going to die alone.”

I pull a small knife out of a holster around my waist and drag myself across the cold stone floor.

“You’re gonna kill me?” she asks again.

“Yes.”

“Then what?”

I stop crawling.

“What if the antidote just makes things stop where they are? What if it just keeps us from getting more sick?”

She’s right. Oh God, she’s right.

“You and me,” she says, “already lost a few days ago.”

I sob quietly into the floor. She’s right she’s right she’s right…I don’t want to keep going on like this.

“I don’t want to die alone,” she whispers.

I look up at her as she shakily gets to her feet, and suddenly I find the strength to do the same.

“There’s…a muttation outside,” I say to her.

“Should we…”

I nod.

Supporting each other, we stumble out into the hallway. Stand in the center and face the long corridor ahead of us.

“We’re ready!” I yell in a throaty voice.

She’s crying again.

“Come get us!”

The lights go out ahead of us, and the scraping noise returns. The girl slips her hand into mine.

I slip my hand into his, grab his knife, and stab him in the heart.

He turns to me with shock in his eyes.

“Y-you…you said—

“I said I didn’t want to die alone. I’m not planning on dying at all.”

The lights blink out faster and faster, and the scraping noise almost drowns out my last words.

“Thank you.”

The boy rips the knife out of his heart and throws it at me, but his aim is terrible and it only slices my arm (Training Point Lost). Wincing, I pick the knife up from the ground and stumble back into the room, looking back only once to see the blood pouring out of him before closing the door, just before it gets swallowed in the darkness.

The cannon fires before I hear any screams. And as I lift my arms up from my waist, the purple starts to fade away.
