With only twelve tributes left in the Games, betting has reopened, with many of my friends collecting small sums of money for their chosen tributes making it to the halfway point while others grumble as they watch the recaps of their favorites dying. I personally have re-watched the woman from 1’s death about five times now, still bitter over my chosen favorite dying two days into the Games. Oh well. Time to pick a new favorite.
I scroll through the tribute betting site, analyzing the information on each tribute in an attempt to decide which one of the twelve I think will win the whole thing.
The woman from 2 is arguably the most popular Career tribute left in the Games, due to her having found refuge in the underground tunnels of the arena. She’s riding hard on the popularity she gained by massacring the rats that had attacked her alliance and killed my previous bet to win the Games. Personally, I find the woman a little boring. If she proves herself in combat with another tribute, maybe then I’ll be impressed.
BETTING ODDS – 1:1
The girl from 3 is the weakest tribute left in the Games. Her popularity jumped a bit when she stole supplies from her former ally, but it immediately dropped back down to almost nothing once the tables were turned on her and she had her supplies taken by the male from 4. She’s got nothing left besides a crossbow and a few arrows. Judging from what she’s displayed so far, it won’t be enough to take her to the end. Still, I’ve been surprised before. She could easily prove all of her doubters wrong. My guess is that she’s the next to die though.
BETTING ODDS – 2:5
The male from 4 continues to maintain a strong foothold in the Games. He’s the only tribute still alive that didn’t start with any allies, proving his tenacity. His strategy at the moment seems to be to observe the other tributes from a distance, only coming close to steal supplies like he did to the girl from 3 yesterday. I like him, but he’s also one of the only tributes to not participate in any sort of combat so far, very much unlike a Career. I’m sure he has the talent though, and he’ll have to prove himself soon enough. No one wins the Hunger Games without a fight.
BETTING ODDS – 1:1
The woman from 4 is in trouble. Being targeted early on by the woman from 8 did her no favors, but once she managed to kill her off two days ago, she became one of the favorites to win. Then she stupidly ate some of the woman from 8’s food that she had preemptively poisoned before dying.
If she manages to recover from the poison, she still stands a chance at winning the Games. Most of us don’t see that happening though. It seems like the woman from 8 will have one more notch on her kill list, even in death.
BETTING ODDS – 3:4
The woman from 5 is the strongest overall tribute left in the Games. She’s a member of the Cornucopia alliance though, and I’ve never seen an alliance so universally loathed in all the Games that I’ve watched. Besides the woman from 6, none of them have done anything of merit in the Games. We all just want one of them to die, for one of them to slip up and get taken out by a muttation or another tribute. I doubt it’ll be the woman from 5 though. As boring as she is, she’s a true force with her bow. If she makes it to the top 4, she’ll probably win the whole thing.
BETTING ODDS – 5:4
The male from 6 is weaker than when he first started the Games, but still remains a tribute to watch despite the injuries he’s sustained. He’s one of the only male tributes still alive to have made a kill in the Games, and he’s proven himself in combat on two different occasions now. Losing his ally from 8 was a major blow to his game, but there are a few still holding out hope that he’ll be the first male winner of the Games in recent history. Personally, I’m not sure he’ll make it past the top 8.
BETTING ODDS – 7:8
The woman from 6 is the shining star of her alliance, solely because she’s the only one of them who’s actually killed another tribute, and a Career at that. After the woman from 5, she’s one of the strongest overall tributes in the Games, despite having nearly been killed yesterday in a muttation attack. She also has dropped several hints that she’s ready to turn on her allies whenever the opportunity is right, earning her plenty of fans who wish to see that alliance crumble. If she’s not one of the final contenders, I’ll be very surprised.
BETTING ODDS – 4:3
The male from 7 is one of the most boring tributes I’ve ever seen. To his credit, he hasn’t suffered any injuries at all during the Games, which only emphasizes how little he’s actually done. His dedication to keeping his handicapped ally from 10 alive was admirable, but ultimately futile. Even though he’s the strongest male tribute left in the Games, he’s already acting like he’s lost. He’ll probably make it to the top 5 or 6, but I don’t see him winning unless he snaps out of his funk and actually starts fighting like his life depends on it.
BETTING ODDS – 8:5
No one can make up their minds about the woman from 9. Despite her being a member of the Cornucopia alliance, she seems to have some level of self-preservation. She’s taken out a good number of the muttations that have attacked her alliance while simultaneously avoiding taking any injuries. On her own, she’ll be able to handle herself, which makes certain people hate her for not just ditching the alliance and striking out on her own. She’s one of the tributes I’ve got my eye on, but I’m not sure if she’s my favorite just yet.
BETTING ODDS – 8:5
Since scoring the first kill of the Games, the male from 11 has encountered nothing but bad luck. First he lost his main ally, then his other ally betrayed him and stole all of his supplies, leaving only his empty crossbow. If he manages to make it to the finale, it’ll be one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the Games. For that reason alone, he’s got a surprising amount of supporters. I’m not one of them. He’s an eventual casualty, as far as I’m concerned.
BETTING ODDS – 4:9
The woman from 11, while stronger than most of the tributes left in the arena, is easily the weakest in her alliance, and she seems to know it. The ferocity that she displays during her fights with the muttations attacking her camp is impressive, as well as being the only member of her alliance to not rely on long-range weaponry. Many of them owe her their lives after she stepped in to deal with muttations that ducked and dodged under arrows with her chain whip. On her own, it’s up in the air whether she’ll last or not. I have a feeling her ferociousness will lead her down the same path as the woman from 8, who burned out rather quickly. She still has plenty of supporters though, so I could be wrong.
BETTING ODDS – 1:1
The woman from 12 has not lived up to the standard set by Jess, the District 12 woman who won last year. Nevertheless, the woman is still very much alive, and technically has scored a kill by mercy-killing her district partner. Statistically, that action bumped up her odds as a tribute with the ability to kill, but anyone actually watching the Games knows that all she’s really done is run away at the first sign of danger. Eventually she’ll be forced into a position where she can’t run, and I don’t see her coming out alive at the end of it. District 12 is not going to have back-to-back winners, unless something incredible happens.
BETTING ODDS – 5:9
Though statistics point to a couple clear frontrunners, I end up settling on the male from 4 as my favorite. The Games become more and more unpredictable near the end, and I think the Cornucopia alliance is about to run into real trouble. Only time will tell.
