Day Sixteen

Dr. Alison Gibson, District 7 Female

I hate this.

Every sound I hear makes me jump. The whirring of the air scrubbers. The occasional thud as something out in space hits the side of the the station. Sometimes the entire stations just groans. And now I’m sure I’m just hearing things. The footsteps of a tribute. Doors closing. Hurried breathing.

I need to get out of here. Back to my husband and daughter. Back where it’s safe. Where no one can touch me.

I’d do anything to get back home.

The arena lets out another groan as I walk down another hallway, and I shudder.

I swear, I would do anything…

I turn a corner and suddenly find myself staring into the Sun. For a moment all I can do is shield my eyes it’s the first natural light I’ve seen in over two weeks. And it’s so bright. So close.

My eyes adjust, and I step through the doorway and into the room, which, unlike all the other rooms in the arena that I’ve seen, is made completely out of glass. The floor, the walls, the ceiling, even the door. All glass.

I place one bare foot onto the glass floor, expecting it to be cool like the rest of the arena, but finding it pleasantly warm to the touch. In all honestly I’m not even looking down at the floor, just out at the Sun. I can feel its warmth caressing my skin, almost like a blanket of heat.

I reach the far side of the room and press my hand up against the glass, catharsis running through my palm as the heated glass makes my skin tingle. I hadn’t realized how cold everything in the arena was until now.

I hear a tribute’s laughter and quickly change directions, heading for the sound. It doesn’t take long for me to find myself standing in the doorway of what I can only call a sun room. In front of me is the star of our solar system, looking close enough that I could reach out and burn myself on its orange and yellow fire. Eclipsed in this fiery light is the boy from 11.

He laughs as he runs his palms against the glass wall in front of him, up and down. The heat emanating from inside the room is incredible, though tolerable. I can understand why he’s enjoying himself.

Well, all good things must come to an end.

I’m about to fit an arrow to my bow when the glass door in front of me swings shut on its own, sealing the room.

A sudden thud causes me to turn, and I see the boy from 9 standing with a bow in his hand. Impulsively, I launch my spear at him. It’s a perfect throw, but I notice the glass door that’s been shut just before my spear bounces off of it, leaving only a small crack.

I start to run for my spear just as the room suddenly gets brighter.

And hotter.

I shield my eyes and pull away from the door just as some sort of filter is lifted from the glass in the room. Sunlight blasts out the glass door in a flaming beam, projecting the flailing shadow of the boy from 11 onto the wall across from it. I realize I’ve fallen to the floor and pull myself up and away from the door just as something slams up against the glass, screaming.

I can only stomach looking at the burning, fleshy form of the boy from 11 for half a second before I turn and run, the boy’s screams echoing through the hallway.

I scream and pound on the glass, leaving bloody stains from where my skin has started to melt and oh God please not like this not like this can’t breathe on fire not like this was so close not like this not like this blood bubbling against glass on my knees on the floor so hot so hot not like this…

A cannon fires, and I perk my head up. Three of us left. Just three.

My heart pounds and burns in my chest. I’m so close to the end. Just three of us left.
