The Gamemakers’ impatience with how long these Games are dragging on is clearly displayed in the ever-changing weather. Now that I’m on my own, I only sleep in short 2-hour bursts, and when I fell asleep last, it was under a shining sun and a clear blue sky. Now the sky is dark, sealed over with gray clouds, and wind howls through the arena.
My hair whips about wildly around my face until I get annoyed enough to rip a strip of fabric from my shirt sleeve and tie my hair back into a loose ponytail. It’s grown longer than when I first entered the arena weeks ago. I run my fingers lightly through the grimy locks, realizing how awful I must look after going without a shower or even washing my face for days now. Well, no one ever won the Hunger Games without getting dirt under their fingernails. There’s certainly worse things I could be thinking about.
He’s popped into my head a few times over the past few days. How could he not? We’d had so many memories together, and to see him lying unconscious on the ground…to just walk away and let Alejandra finish him off…
No. I can’t break now. Not yet.
There will be plenty of time to fall apart and mourn and regret letting Conner die once I get out of here.
The roaring wind provides perfect cover as I slowly approach my target. Sitting just outside the Cornucopia, her back is to me, her hair twisting in the wind like a jet black blizzard. My club suddenly feels so much heavier in my hand as a wave of exhaustion sweeps over me. My shoulder throbs as the woman from 9 turns slightly, revealing her bow gripped tightly in her hands. I wonder if she’s ever let go of it since she’s been in here. She certainly knows how to use it, as I learned four days ago.
If I’m going to do this, I have to do it now. When the wind is at its strongest. It won’t be pretty, it won’t be quick, but I have to do it if I want to get out of this godforsaken arena.
I break into a sprint.
The sickening feeling that I’m being watched suddenly peaks, and I whirl around to see the woman from 2 bearing down on me. I let out a shriek that’s muffled by the wind, and flick my hair out of my face as I quickly leap to my feet, load an arrow, and fire it at my would-be assailant.
It’s a perfect shot. A perfect shot on a windless day. I watch with horror as the wind catches the fletching of my arrow and carries it far off target. There’s no time to reload, no time to do anything but brace for impact as the woman crashes into me, sending us both tumbling to the ground.
Adrenaline rushes through my veins as I clamber to my knees and slam my club down towards the woman from 9’s head. She’s fast, rolling to the side and just barely avoiding getting her face smashed in. She gets to her feet and takes one step before I sweep her legs out from under her, sending her crashing back to the ground. She rolls over and crawls backwards on her elbows as I get back on my own feet.
When I feel the back of my head slam into the side of the Cornucopia, I know it’s over. That I’m cornered. That I’m going to finish in 4th place.
That I’m going to die.
I consider saying a few parting words to the woman as she glares up at me with rage and defiance, but the right words don’t come.
So I slam my club into the side of her head as hard as I can, sending it back into the side of the Cornucopia with a sickening thud that echoes through the golden horn. If she’s still conscious, she’s definitely knocked out the second time I beat my club into her skull.
Teeth fly. Bones crunch. Blood spills.
It takes a long, long time for her cannon to fire.
