I return from the river with three bottles of water to find Caris and Edwin exactly as I left them. Edwin sits at the base of a giant mossy tree, sharpening his katana. His vision is coming back, slowly, but he was blind and terrified for most of yesterday.
Caris is up in the tree. The second she regained feeling in her arm, she clambered up into the branches and refused to come back down, out of fear of the centipede that nearly killed her and Edwin. I’ve tried explaining to her that the giant bug we encountered doesn’t leave the riverside, but she remains convinced that if she spends more than a minute on the ground, the centipede will burst from the foliage and kill us all.
“Water, Edwin,” I say, holding a bottle out in front of him. He pushes his head forward and squints his eyes, before reaching out and pawing the air until he grabs the bottle from my hand.
I find Caris whittling a branch with a knife up in the tree after a few minutes of climbing. I hand her a water bottle. Then we sit in the hazy darkness together, silent.
Caris used to be so strong, perhaps the strongest tribute in the Games. I didn’t see myself outlasting her. But now? Seeing her mute and terrified?
Maybe I will get out of here.
I hear the tribute before I see him. Soft, pained whimpers. Crunching leaves. I round a massive tree and find the male tribute from 9 dragging himself along the ground, a hand pressed against his side. Sensing me approaching, he turns his head back before scrambling for a brief panicked second. Whatever wound he’s covering with his hand puts an end to his last-ditch effort to escape, and he rolls over in submission to the inevitable as I line up my crossbow with his head.
I’m about to fire an arrow into his skull when I get a good look at just how wounded he is. Chunks of flesh have been ripped off every inch of his body, and he’s bleeding heavily. It’s a wonder that he’s even still alive.
“What did this to you?” I breathe, already knowing the answer.
“Centipede,” he moans, before coughing up a frightening amount of blood. “Came out of nowhere…allies…left me for dead.”
For a moment, there’s nothing but the sound of the man’s labored breathing and the light bristling of leaves in the canopy above us.
I fire my arrow and put the male from 9 out of his misery. His cannon fires before I can even step forward and reclaim my ammunition.
I’d watched him in training. Weak, defenseless, inexperienced. It’s a wonder he even managed to find allies in the first place. But even they must have known that this is how it was going to end for him.
I sit back against the massive tree and watch the hovercraft claw break through the canopy and collect my first victim’s corpse.
At least he didn’t die alone.
