Hazy smoke fills my dreams, and I wake up as it suddenly fills my lungs.
The jungle is burning.
I grab my supplies and pack quickly, feeling the heat of the approaching flames on my back. I have to run.
I charge forward, then stop. Back up, whirl around, choke on smoke and stare down the wall of fire enclosing me on all sides.
All sides except for one.
I rush through the hole in the smoke just as the patch of grass where I was sleeping just a minute ago is engulfed in flames.
I run and run and run.
I sprint as fast as I can, dodging the burning trees as they crash to the ground around me. The river has to be close, it has to be close…
The ground suddenly turns muddy, and then I’m stumbling into the knee-deep water, tripping and crashing face-first into the river. I emerge gasping for air, only to choke on smoke. I sink as low as I can into the water until just my head is poking out of the rushing water, the heat of the burning forest singing my face.
A horrible screeching sound draws my attention behind me, and I watch in stunned horror as a giant insect of some kind crashes out of the burning jungle, engulfed in flames. It drops to the ground and thrashes violently as the flames strip it of life. A falling tree crushes the creature before I can really get a good look at it, putting it out if its misery.
The way it thrashed around and screamed, I’m half-surprised a cannon didn’t fire.
I dunk my head under the water as the heat becomes too much to bear. I keep doing that until the flames are gone, until a cloak of ash covers the surface of the water.
I wedge myself into an impossibly small cave-like space formed by a group of boulders and try to catch my breath as the fire destroys the jungle. No doubt this fire is one of the same fires that started two days ago during the feast. The woman from 7’s ashes are probably being tossed through the jungle in the super-heated air.
A river of the small bugs that destroyed my supplies days ago swarms right past my temporary bunker. The swarm quickly disintegrates after a few moments as the flaming bugs still instinctively sticking with their insect brethren suddenly break rank and thrash about on the ground, screeching and burning.
One of the bugs, its antennae burning like candlesticks, stumbles into the cave and bumps into my leg. It bites it reflexively (Attribute Point Lost) and I scream in pain and kick the creature back out into the burning forest.
The heat becomes unbearable, and I turn and press my face against the cool boulder, clasping my hand over my wound and listening to the screeches of the dying insects over the roar of the flames.
Eventually, it all fades away.
