The winner of today’s sponsorship vote is…Amanda Gregornik of District 11!
Congrats Amanda, you get a free attribute point added to your lowest attribute (Charm).
God has turned her face away from me. I weep and grind my teeth at the foot of the Cornucopia, begging for Her returned favor. But she does not answer, does not turn her gaze from my three allies.
Jess still has God’s favor from her spilling of the male from 9’s blood, though that favor is waning. Taylor has God’s blessing from her slaying of the spider monster. Maureen is showered in God’s affection from the blood that pours from her leg whenever her wound breaks open (Attribute Point Lost).
In desperation, I grab a knife and slash it across my palm (Attribute Point Lost), lifting my bleeding hand towards Her.
“Return your gaze to me! I am your servant!”
I glance over at Luke, who’s cut himself and is now screaming at the sky. Lunatic.
With Jordan keeping watch for centipedes, I dunk my lacerated hands into the chilled river water and wait for the pain to subside. Most of the places where the acid webbing burned through my skin have scarred over, but some deeper wounds are still open and bleed whenever I close or open my hands (Attribute Point Lost).
I’m getting weaker and weaker every day in the arena. Hopefully Jordan will be the last one standing once I’m gone.
I couldn’t sleep last night.
It wasn’t because of the pain in my arms and legs from my spider silk wounds, though those definitely didn’t help. One particularly nasty cut on my left arm still hasn’t stopped bleeding (Attribute Point Lost), and I’ve nearly run out of bandages to keep it covered.
The real reason I can’t sleep though, is the fact that no one’s watching my back anymore. No one.
I’m not stupid. There’s no way anyone watching expects me to win and I haven’t done anything interesting enough in the Games to warrant my safety from the Gamemakers throwing a few more spiders at me to take me out. I have to kill someone to keep their interest, to show I’m worth a bit of camera time. This is just a show, after all. Gotta give the people what they want.
Right now, I’m guessing the people want me dead.
God, I’m tired.
The argument starts when Amanda accuses Julia of stealing food from her backpack.
“I didn’t take shit from you, Amanda!”
“Well there were two apples in my bag and now there’s only one! And I saw you toss an apple core away!”
“No I didn’t.”
“Liar, you absolutely did!”
“Well then where’s the core, Amanda? Where did I throw it?”
“Shut up! I know what I saw and you know you stole it!”
Amanda suddenly advances on Julia, who lifts her bow and quickly notches an arrow.
Eileen is on her feet in an instant, jumping between the two women.
“Amanda! Julia! Calm down!”
After that, it all happens rather quickly.
Maybe Julia stumbles and loses her grip. Maybe she lets go intentionally. All I know is that a second later, her arrow leaves her bowstring.
Eileen flinches, her back towards me. She lifts a hand towards her face, but it never makes it there. She falls. I see the arrow jutting out of the back of her head before she crumples to the ground. Her cannon fires.
It’s quiet for a second. A very long second.
“Look what you made me do…”
Julia starts breathing heavily, almost gasping.
“LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO!”
She loads another arrow, screaming, and the four of us turn to run.
I grab my backpack just as Julia shoots Maurice in the back. He goes down with a grunt, and then I’m ducking behind a tree and running off into the forest. Somewhere behind me, I hear Carmeanna yelp in pain (Attribute Point Lost). I keep running and running and running. Eileen. My God, Eileen…
Another cannon fires.
Maurice lifts his mace and manages to bash it against my leg (Attribute Point Lost) before I fire one last arrow into him, silencing him for good. The haze of rage clears almost immediately as his cannon fires.
I look around our campsite, empty except for Eileen and Maurice’s bodies.
What…what have I done?
Later, as the anthem plays and Maurice and Eileen’s pictures are projected into the sky, I find the second apple, buried deep in my backpack under a light spring jacket.
