A sudden rumbling sound causes me to lift my head and look towards the door of the room my alliance has been resting in.
“What’s that noise?” Shalom moans as she sits up from her nap, rubbing her eyes and yawning.
“I don’t know.”
Joselyn walks swiftly over to the door, sword drawn. She opens it swiftly, revealing an empty hallway over her shoulder.
Or so I think.
“Time to leave,” Joselyn announces as she turns back to face the two of us. It’s only then that I notice the water pouring into the room between her feet.
My alliance slogs behind me through the ankle-high water, the current pushing us forward.
“We need to find a watertight door!” Dr. Gibson yells out over the groans and rumbles that echo through the hallway. “Get to a screen!”
I turn a corner and, thank God, a screen’s right there on the wall. I activate it as the lights begin to blink above my head.
“How may I assist you?” it asks in a calm voice
“Where’s a water-tight door?” I shout over the din.
A line appears on the floor, a vibrant orange that stands out against the water.
“Doors closing in ten minutes,” the screen announces matter-of-factly, before flipping back into the wall.
Drew and I make it back to the room just in time to catch our allies leaving.
Chris sees us first, relief pouring over his face.
“You made it!”
“Where do we go?” Drew shouts over the roaring water, which is now almost knee-deep.
“Follow the current!” shouts Dr. Bieber. “They’re trying to herd us, not trying to drown us.”
She barely finishes her sentence before a horrible groaning noise sounds from behind me. I turn just in time to see the door at the far end of the hallway burst open, sending a wave of water erupting towards us.
The doors in the hallway rumble and leak water as Alexandra, Joseph, and I run for our lives, following the orange line on the ground. The water in our hallway rushes past our ankles, the groaning doors holding back what I’d guess is enough water to drown us.
I charge past an open door, Alexandra hot on my heels. A pair of footsteps drops off behind me, and I look over my shoulder to see Joseph duck into the room, slamming the door shut behind him. I’m about to turn back to get him when a door back down the hallway is blasted off its hinges by a blast of water, which rushes down the hallway towards Alexandra and me.
We run as fast as our feet can take us, our screams muffled by the roaring water that suddenly rises above our ankles.
I finally reach the door my line directed me to. It’s more like a wall than a door, slowly rising as water pours over it. I step over the rising wall, and into a room with grated flooring, through which the water pours into a seemingly infinite basin. I keep running, and find myself in a hallway very similar to the ones I’ve been running through for the past few days. The only difference is these hallways are dry.
I slow my run to a walk, my legs burning. It’s only after I notice my right leg is burning more than the other that I look down and see the large cut on my thigh (Attribute Point Lost). Apparently I sliced myself with the knife I’ve got gripped in my right hand as I was escaping the water.
Grumbling, I stumble off to find a screen that can direct me to a supply room, cursing my own stupidity.
The lights above our heads flicker as the walls begin to leak water. My heart pounds in my chest as I push through the knee-high water as hard as I can.
Something groans behind me, and I turn just in time to watch Shalom get slammed into a wall by a door that explodes off its hinges, followed by a solid block of water. It slams into Joselyn and me, sweeping us off our feet. The two of us scream as the water carries us around a corner and away from Shalom, sending us flying down a hallway. The water around me becomes tinged with red, as a muffled cannon fires over the sound of the roaring water.
I’m drowning, flailing around in the heavy current of water that’s swallowed up my alliance.
And then suddenly, I’m falling, and then my head slams into something hard and metallic.
I roll out of the water, coughing and sputtering as I sit up and look over at the waterfall that pours out over a halfway-closed rising door and drops through the grated holes in the floor.
Katherine suddenly flies out over the top of the door, crashing to the floor. Cyle follows right after her, landing on top of Katherine.
I move to help them, helping a sputtering Katherine to her feet (Attribute Point Lost). We need to move; I don’t want to be around when whatever’s collecting the water below us fills up.
I cough up water (Attribute Point Lost) as I sit on the grated floor. Behind me, the rising door only has a couple more feet left before it’s closed. Jackie, somehow unscathed from our journey through the water, pulls me to my feet.
“We need to move. More tributes might come through, and they might have weapons. I’m sorry but we need to move.”
With that, she runs with me, still trying to catch my breath, in tow.
My allies and I slump up against the wall of the drainage room as the rising door finally shuts and seals off the waterfall. We’re all coughing up water (Attribute Point Lost) and bruised from being slammed around the hallways by the current, but at least we’re all still alive, and together.
“We’ll rest here for a bit,” I groan, “and then we’ll try to find somewhere to make a new base.” My allies either nod or moan in response.
We almost drowned. It’s an unexpected twist, especially in space. But I’m guessing that the hallways won’t be as expansive in this area of the arena as they were in the section that’s now flooded. Hunting will be better over here.
My eyes shoot open as I suddenly spew up a mixture of water and bile (Attribute Point Lost). Coughing violently, I slowly sit up to find Alex in near-hysterics.
“I thought you were dead!” he shouts, laughing.
Still coughing, I look around the room, my eyes tracing across the massive now-shut door, and stopping as they reach the grated floor, where Shalom’s body lies. I wince and look away as I notice her crushed face, where the door slammed into her.
“We made it,” Alex says through panicked giggles. “We made it.”
I sit slumped against the wall, staring at the door across from me as it leaks water into the room.
I got scared. I got scared and I ducked into this room without thinking. And now I’m going to die for it.
Wish I hadn’t dropped my katana. Probably would have ended things faster than drowning will.
The blinking lights above me flicker one last time before going out completely, just as the door bursts open.
I’m swallowed up into the dark water.
