“Good afternoon, tributes!”
I flinch as the voice reverberates through the jungle, echoing off of the trees.
The static-filled speech continues as I clutch my backpack straps in my now-clammy hands
“The nine of you are to be commended for making it this far!”
The voice drops out, but the static doesn’t.
“I do believe it’s time for a feast!”
That’s not static.
I whirl around just as they reach me.
I’m trying to make out the rest of the announcement when a swarm of fast-crawling bugs suddenly erupts from the trees, clicking and hissing. I turn to run but they surround me quickly in a slowly-closing circle.
I’ve never seen anything like the finger-sized insects. They look almost like pill bugs, only with giant mouths and fangs like a snake.
The circle closes tighter and tighter as I grip my water bottle, the only thing close to a weapon I have to protect myself.
The bugs swarm in a living river right past me, heading straight for my backpack. I reach for it with a scream, only to have several of them launch themselves at my outstretched hand. Only two or three actually manage to bite me (Attribute Point Lost), but the pain is so intense that it feels like my fingers have been ripped off.
The bugs reach my backpack, and in moments they’ve shredded it and its contents completely.
I wait for them to turn on me, but then they’re retreating back into the forest in a long snaking line.
Luke and Jess clamber up onto the top of the Cornucopia as the bugs destroy the remnants of our food and water supplies. Off in the distance, a screaming Maureen disappears into the jungle as a small trail of bugs leap after her and her backpack full of water and her Moltov cocktails.
The bugs circle the Cornucopia, obviously eyeing the pack of food I’ve got over my shoulder. But the sides of the Cornucopia are too slick for them to climb up. They leap and gnash their jaws at us like little insectoid piranha.
“Drop the bag!” screams Jess next to me, holding a hand over her arm and trying to staunch the flow of blood from where one of the bugs bit her (Attribute Point Lost).
“The Gamemakers will call them off!” I scream back at her. “The things can’t even get up here!”
I lose my patience and give Taylor a shove, sending her sprawling and then tumbling over the side of the Cornucopia.
The only things I hear over the sound of the swarming bugs are Taylor’s half-second scream and Luke’s insane laughter at the sight of Taylor’s blood flowing in rivulets between and over the bugs as they destroy the bag and flay her down to bone almost instantly.
I don’t even hear her cannon fire, but the bleached skeleton the bugs leave behind as they race off to where Maureen disappeared into the jungle is all the proof I need that she’s dead.
Luke leaps off of the Cornucopia and wipes his palms on the bloody grass.
“A worthy offering to God, Jess!” he screams as he smears Taylor’s blood across his face.
The little bugs are close, snapping at my ankles and leaping at me with tiny little hisses that combine in a horrific din. I scream in pain as one of them clamps onto my upper thigh (Attribute Point Lost).
In a panic, I take my backpack off and throw it on backwards, so that the bag rests against my chest. I’m an idiot for not realizing what they were after sooner.
Reaching into the bag, I find the plastic water bottle squeezed in between my Molotov cocktails and whip it over my shoulder. The bugs peel off almost instantly, shredding the bottle before it even hits the ground.
Satisfied, the bugs storm off into the jungle, leaving me alone in the dark.
From my hiding place between two boulders, I see the woman from 11 stumble into view holding only a slingshot and a tiny satchel of what I can only assume are rocks. She’s bleeding, signs of a recent attack (Attribute Point Lost).
I consider attacking her, but she’s gone before I can make a move.
My empty stomach growls as I think about the upcoming feast. Four days without food has taken a number on me, and the lack of water hasn’t helped either since I can’t find where the river snakes through the jungle (Attribute Point Lost). I do recognize these two boulders, where my alliance had made camp the first night of the Games. And I know that the open plain where the Cornucopia sits, to the north of these rocks, is where the feast will be held, according to the announcement.
For once in the Games, I sit and wait.
The bugs retreat into the forest as I slump to the ground and stare at my shredded hand numbly (Attribute Point Lost). My water is gone, and so are my ring and index fingers. I tear off a piece of my shirt and try my best to wrap it around my hand as a makeshift bandage, wincing in pain as the nerves in the shredded bones of my missing fingers make my brain scream.
I wish I still had my knife so I could end this. At least I’ll be given a quick death at the feast tomorrow. God I want this to end.
