Day Ten
I listen intently as the crunching of foliage gets closer and closer.
“Edwin.”
I nudge my ally awake forcefully. He opens his eyes, stammering.
“Wha-what is it?”
“Someone’s coming.”
Edwin’s eyes go wide with fear. We’re too entrenched in our camp to make a run for it, not without leaving behind our food and water stock.
I pull out my knife and grip it in my sweaty palm.
“Go, man. Hide. Maybe they’ll think it’s just me here.”
To his credit, Edwin hesitates for a moment before he rushes off deeper into the forest, taking nothing with him but a knife and a bottle of water.
The sound of his retreat catches the attention of whatever tribute is approaching. They’re running now. I lift a knife and get ready to throw. One last attempt to stave off the inevitable.
The woman from 2 crashes through the foliage and I chuck the knife as hard as I can.
I stop in my tracks as a knife wedges itself into the trunk of a tree barely inches away from my head. I stare at it for a moment before turning to look back at the male from 1, who stands weaponless in the small clearing where he’s made camp.
“You missed.”
I lift my crossbow and launch a bolt into the boy’s chest, sending him sprawling backwards into a tree.
I grin, loading up another arrow to deliver the death blow as the male from 1 curls up on the ground, bleeding profusely.
“Your ally from 6 around?” I ask.
He tries to speak but ends up choking on his own blood.
“Don’t worry. I’ll find him.”
I fire the arrow into his temple and his cannon fires almost immediately. Second kill. It’s about time.
I set to work scrounging around the campsite as the man’s corpse is airlifted into the sky. Not much in the way of supplies. A few ration packs, a rotting apple, three water bottles. They were probably holding out for the feast. Too bad. I’ll find District 6 eventually, he couldn’t have gotten far.
I suddenly sense that I’m not alone, and whirl to face the tribute that’s entered the clearing. It’s my ally Kylie.
No. Not my ally.
But in that split second of forgetfulness, she’s already aimed her bow at me.
I shoot Carmeanna in the head effortlessly, the arrow slamming deep into her skull with a sickening thud and sending her head snapping back. She dies before she even starts to fall, her cannon firing just before she lands slumped against a large backpack.
I sigh, sheathing my bow before walking over and pulling the now-bloodied backpack from underneath Carmeanna’s body.
Yesterday there were six of us all working together. And now there are only three, scrambling around the jungle and trying to stay alive.
My former allies will underestimate me. They will mistake my previous kindness for pacifism. It’s horrible. I do want to be kind.
But more than that, I want to live.
A second cannon fires, and I start running again. There’s no way Jordan made it out alive. No way. I’m on my own.
In my panic, I rush around a large oak and slam right into another tribute, knocking my head into his (Attribute Point Lost).
We fall to the ground in a heap.
I quickly clamber up to my hands and knees and lock eyes with the male from 10, who stares back just as panicked at me.
There’s a tense couple of seconds where neither of us moves.
Then I leap back to my feet and charge past him before he can get up.
My head aching (Attribute Point Lost), I gingerly get back on my feet as the sounds of the man from 6 escaping deeper into the forest subside. Shit. I had a chance there to get a kill and I missed it.
A small beam of sunlight reflects into my eyes off of something shiny on the ground. I grin, and lean down to pick up the knife that the fleeing tribute dropped in the collision. At least I have a weapon now. Maybe I can still catch him. He’s the weakest of us all now.
I’ll kill him, or die trying.
