Day Three

Zachary Bach, D9 Male

Zachary Bach, D9 Male

I feign sleep against a large boulder next to the river that my alliance found yesterday. Over the sound of running water, my allies are whispering. About me.

“He’s going to get us killed.”

“Maybe.”

“Maybe? He can barely walk, let alone run if a tribute attacks us!”

The giant bruise on my leg throbs as if in response (Attribute Point Lost) to my ally from 10.

Matt sighs.

“I don’t want him to die alone. I don’t want any of us to.”

There’s silence for a moment before Kyle responds.

“If we get attacked, I’m not going back for him. You do what you want, but I plan on getting out of here alive.”

“If the time comes, I’m sure you’ll do what’s right in the moment.”

More silence.

“We’ll let him rest for a little bit longer, and then we have to move,” says Kyle finally. “Gamemakers won’t like us staying put near the water for very long.

Facing away from my allies, I peer through half-closed eyes at a dried-up brown leaf on the jungle floor.

We’re all dying in here. I whisper a silent promise to myself that I’ll try to be the last to go.

I spoke with God again today, and She demanded more sacrifice. While She remained pleased with my blood offering from the first day in the arena, She will not be fully satiated until only I am left. Only then, She told me, will I ascend to my rightful position in Her Kingdom. She has promised me such greatness, and I will do what she requires.

My allies do not believe, though I have tried again and again to convince them to follow Her. Soon She will require their blood as well, but for now She has bestowed her halo of blessing over them. They shall not die by my hand until She commands it.

The other tributes will suffice for now.

The female from 9’s screams cease as my ally from 8 slices off her head. Her cannon fires as her body slumps backwards over her legs. Stevie grins back at me and then kneels by the river where she had been drinking to wash his katana.

I walk over to the beheaded corpse and dip my fingers in the blood pooling around it.

“She is pleased with your sacrifice!” I shout gleefully to my ally.

“Give it a rest, fish boy,” he mutters back, getting to his feet. “She had allies and they’re probably close by. Maybe we can get the drop on them.”

I nod in agreement, rubbing the dead tribute’s blood between my fingers.

“Next kill is mine.”

Stevie doesn’t get a chance to respond before the ground starts rumbling.

By the time myself and my allies from 1 reach the outcrop near the river where Jenna was screaming, her cannon has already fired. She’d wandered off away from camp for some reason, and none of us had noticed she was missing until we’d heard her screaming for help.

Now the three of us are peering out of the foliage at the two male tributes who finished her off. Caris reacts almost immediately once she sees Jenna’s headless body. She leaps out from behind the trees and charges at the male from 8. I’m following right behind her just as the ground starts to rumble.

Two things happen very quickly as my ally from 4 finishes speaking. The first is that the girl from 1 appears out of nowhere, charging at me with her own katana. The second is that I’m knocked to my feet as something shoots out of the ground between us with a horrifying hissing and clicking sound.

I stop dead in my tracks as a giant centipede burrows out of the ground in between me and the male from 8. It hisses and clicks and slithers towards the horrified male from 8, who claws his way backwards into the river. The giant bug rears up, displaying its jaws and leaking red-tinged saliva out of its mouth.

“Run!” screams Edwin from behind me. The centipede whirls around to face us, and shoots a blast of saliva at the two of us as we turn to run back for the trees. I raise my sword arm to block my eyes, and feel the saliva splash against it. Only a second passes before my arm drops to my side, completely numb and paralyzed (Attribute Point Lost). I scream as my katana drops from my now-useless hand.

“Leave it!” screams my district partner Jordan as he rushes out from the trees to help Edwin, who took a hit directly in the eyes and is now screaming blindly on the forest floor. “Just run!”

As the three of us stumble back into the trees, I turn to see the male tribute from 4 making a similar retreat. The last thing I see before I turn to run back to camp is the giant centipede turning its attention back to the male from 8 in the water.

I somehow manage to clamber to my feet and raise my sword, but the centipede hits me with a full blast of saliva and my whole body goes numb, sending me tumbling back into the water and struggling . To my right, I hear branches snap and another splash as Nate from 7 drops from a tree into the river. He’s been here the whole time?

Nate stumbles off away from me on what must be a sprained ankle (Attribute Point Lost) as the centipede rears up once again. The paralyzing agent in its saliva is so effective that I don’t feel a thing when it rips my leg off, then my arm, then my head.

As I tear through the undergrowth, Stevie’s cannon fires. I grin. Double the blood for Her satisfaction.
