Day Two

Savanna’s gone. Surprisingly so, considering how strong she was. I may have said maybe twenty words to her in our time together in the Capitol before the Games, but seeing her face up in the sky sent a twinge of grief through me. We could have been allies, and I’m sure she would have accepted if I’d asked her. But I don’t want allies. I want to do this by myself.

It’s why I chose to make the island with the dark clouds looming over it my base in the arena. I knew the other tributes would all veer off towards the more colorful and inviting islands. The sandbar bridge I traveled on to get here was swallowed up by the tide just as I arrived, and I know for a fact that no one got here before me. I’m alone.

Sierra was alone on this day in her Games too, her allies dead less than 36 hours into the Games. Watching her incinerate the muttations that destroyed her alliance was one of the proudest moments of my life. My brilliant and bold wife, carving out a hiding place in one of the most dangerous arenas in the history of the Games. I was so sure she’d come home to me, that she wouldn’t come up against a fight she couldn’t win.

Watching her die destroyed me. She was so close. Just one tribute left besides herself, and she had him bleeding out at her feet.

And then…

I can’t really put a finger on why I volunteered for the Games this year. I just knew I couldn’t sit in our house anymore, knowing she wasn’t coming back, her side of the bed cold and empty.

Maybe I have a death wish. Maybe I don’t want to get out of here. I guess I’ll find out once the first tribute comes to my island.

Until then, I’ll wait. And mourn.

Rustling grass pulls me out of my slumber. Carefully, I peek over the edge of my hammock and down towards the floor of the jungle, my district partner Jake snoring lightly in his hammock a few branches away from me. Below us, I can just barely make out two tributes, scrounging the forest floor for berry bushes and other edible plants. It’s the man from 6 and the woman from 10, whose arm is wrapped in a bandage from where  Jake shot her yesterday. So, they ended up on this island too. I half-consider rolling over and waking up Jake so we can take them out with a couple well-placed crossbow shots, but rethink it once I notice the man has a crossbow loaded and at the ready. By the time Jake was ready to fire, we’ll have made far too much noise to go unnoticed. The man from 10 scored as high as I did in training, so there’s no doubt that he knows how to use his crossbow.

So I’m forced to lie quietly and watch the pair skulk through the undergrowth, collecting the berries that I’d planned on eating this morning. If they’re here, it means the woman from 1 and man from 8 are here as well. A strong alliance, save for the woman from 10. I have no idea how she managed to surround herself with such strong tributes, but it won’t do her any good. She’s already wounded, and she’ll be easy to pick off once Jake and I catch them off guard.

The two tributes wander out of sight, and I roll back over in my hammock and stare up at the canopy, the sun already shining brightly through the leaves.

There might be lots of tributes on this island, but District 7 owns the treetops. And soon, we’ll own it all.

It’s not so much the sun that wakes me up as it is the sun’s effects on the Cornucopia. The gold heats quicker than I thought it would, and I’m jolted out of my sleep as the metal starts burning my skin through my jumpsuit. I slide quickly off of the golden horn and into the water, immediately finding cool relief.

I didn’t make it to an island yesterday. Killing the woman from 2 wasn’t my original plan, and she fought for a lot longer than I thought she would. By the time she was dead, the tide was already too high to find the bridges to the islands that all the other tributes traveled across. And I wasn’t planning on swimming for an hour with no supplies. Sleeping on top of the Cornucopia was my only real option.

I grab the duffel bag of supplies that I collected late last night and survey the possible routes I could take, settling on the island with the dark clouds. Clouds have to mean rain, and I wasn’t able to find much fresh water in the leftover supplies.

Climbing up out of the water and onto the sandbar, I start walking, a spiked mace in my right hand and my duffel bag hooked over my left shoulder. The arena feels so empty, and the lack of cannons when I finally arrive at my destination only amplifies my nerves.

I don’t know where everyone is, but I’m sure the Gamemakers will force us together soon. And I’ll be ready to kill again when they do.
